The House
The house seamlessly blends Jesuit heritage with contemporary elegance. Each corner reveals meticulously preserved historic elements, including the original baroque chapel, high arched ceilings and exquisite Portuguese tiles from the 18th century. As you explore these features, you will be transported to the past, immersing yourself in the essence of the history that surrounds you.
The tile panel in the living room
The back wall of the drawing room is adorned with a stunning 18th-century tile panel, crafted by the esteemed Portuguese azulejos master, Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes (1695 - 1778). This exquisite panel depicts the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary by the archangel Gabriel on the right side, while on the left, it showcases a depiction of Jesus praying in the Temple.
Azulejos hold a significant place in Portuguese history and cultural heritage. These meticulously handcrafted tiles have made a lasting impact over the centuries, becoming synonymous with Portugal. Their intricate designs and decorative motifs infuse every space they occupy with a sense of vibrancy and beauty.
In contrast to the historic azulejos, the house also showcases the contemporary artwork of Annabelle Moreau. Her large steel panels and performative photographs add a modern and artistic touch to the rooms, creating a captivating fusion of past and present aesthetics.
The Kitchen
In addition to the beautiful old building, Tomas Ramos and his ARC Architects team designed a modern extension to the house, made of steel and glass. The kitchen becomes an integrated part of the exterior allowing light and reflections to create a connection from the old monastery and its prolongation into nature.
