A Sustainable Estate

Extending over 300 hectares in the Alentejo region, our estate boasts a vast cork forest as well as hectares of olive trees, a great number of bee hives, and flourishing fruit trees including oranges, lemons, pomegranates, and figs, making up a rich ecosystem.

We have a strong commitment to sustainability, prioritizing the preservation of the land for future generations. The presence of black Iberian pigs and grazing sheep further exemplifies our dedication to harmonious and regenerative farming practices.

A Commitment to Extensive Farming

Extensive farming olive groves Portugal

At Castelo Ventoso, we are proud to practice extensive farming methods deeply rooted in a holistic approach, much like the Jesuits did in the past. We draw inspiration from their timeless wisdom and profound connection to the land, which has guided us in developing our own sustainable approach to land management.

Our commitment to extensive farming comprises various elements, including the sustainable management of the cork forests, which is one of the most valuable resources of the Alentejo. Additionally, our olive groves yield high-quality olives, which we use to produce our own olive oil, known for its exquisite flavor and superior quality.

One of the unique aspects of our farming practices is the presence of black Iberian pigs and grazing sheep. These animals play a vital role in maintaining the health of the ‘montado’ ecosystem as they assist in controlling the growth of bushes around the trees, contributing to soil health and acting as a natural fire prevention measure. The meat and wool from both herds are used, making efficient use of resources and minimizing waste.

This holistic approach to farming, known as ‘o montado’, is highly sustainable and regenerative, reflecting our commitment to preserving the natural beauty and cultural significance of the Alentejo region for future generations.
